The Steller's Jay is a boisterous bully, well known for chasing other birds away from backyard feeders and helping itself to unattended picnic lunches. Yet BC named this jay our provincial bird. How did this happen?
Well, in 1987, it came down to a narrow a vote, the jay squeaking past its nearest competitors, the Peregrine Falcon and the Trumpeter Swan. Maybe the Steller's Jay won because it's often where people are. It's a handsome bird, after all, and seemed willing to campaign loudly and boldly for the title.
